COLOR THEORY

About the Course

Color Theory was the first course I completed as part of my Fashion Design certificate program. This foundational class introduced me to the essential principles and practical applications of color in design.

Throughout the course, I explored several key concepts, including:

  • The 9-step grayscale, which helped me understand tonal range and the role of value in creating depth and visual interest.

  • The 12-hue color wheel, offering insight into primary, secondary, and tertiary colors and how they interact.

  • The 5-step saturation scale, which demonstrated how color intensity can influence mood and perception.

  • Color relativity, teaching how colors can appear different depending on their surrounding hues.

  • Color harmony, guiding the creation of pleasing and balanced color combinations.

  • Color value and mid-tone groupings, which are essential in achieving visual cohesion and contrast in designs.

  • Optical blending, a technique that shows how colors can visually mix in the viewer’s eye rather than on the palette.

  • Manipulating contrast—both increasing and diminishing it—to ground colors effectively within a composition.

This course deepened my understanding of how color functions both scientifically and artistically, giving me the tools to make more informed and expressive design choices in my fashion projects.
